Homework Help Program
Staff reported that a counselor from Wells Middle School was interested in having
seniors tutor middle school students in the areas of math, English and history. Based on
the resources available for offering a Homework Help Program, staff recommends
incorporating the senior volunteers into the City’s Recreation on Campus program at
Wells Middle School, rather than starting a new program at the Senior Center. The
Advisory Committee supported staff’s recommendation to work in conjunction with the
Recreation on Campus program to develop the Homework Help Program.
New Business - None
The Advisory Committee supported staff’s recommendation of offering a program called
Step Out for Senior Centers. This event will be held in conjunction with the free lunch
and orientation program that the Dublin Senior Center Foundation has agreed to subsidize
(up to $300) to entice seniors to become a Dublin Senior Center supporter.
Staff will develop the program specifics and present it to the Advisory Committee at a
future meeting. Burr Cain suggested that the program also be presented to the Parks and
Committee Services Department and to City Council to gain their support. This event
could possibly be a city-wide event in which other departments, such as the Fire
Department and Police Department could lend their support as well as use it as an
opportunity to promote their Department. Ideas may include having the Fire Department
sponsor a pancake breakfast. The Police Department, high school and community
services clubs could provide the manpower along the walking course.
Other Business
In regards to the Little League’s request for senior volunteers to help at their Snack Bar,
Burr Cain recommended that Staff write a letter to Jeff Chapman stating that the Senior
Advisory Committee members appreciates the Little League’s offer and opportunity to
raise funds at their Snack Bar. However, since no one has responded to the
advertisement written in the Dublin Doings, we decline their offer at this time.
In regards to the Van Feasibility Study, the Advisory Committee announced that the
Parks and Community Services and City Council lend supported and approved Staff’s
Van Proposal. Mary Lou Bielke, Rich Guarienti, Paul Silvas and Anna Hudson attended
the December City Council Meeting.
George McHugh presented his ideas in writing about the preliminary plans for the new
Dublin Senior Center to be located at the present Dublin Library site. The comments will
be reviewed with the housing study is in progress.
Adjournment
Being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 11:15 a.m.
Respectfully submitted,
Anna Hudson
