Roll Call Committee Members Present: Bielke, Cain, Gifford, McHugh, Silvas Staff Members Present: Hudson, McCreary Oral Communications - None Approval of Minutes IT WAS MOVED BY CAIN AND SECONDED BY SILVAS TO APPROVE THE MINUTES OF NOVEMBER 14, 2002 AS WRITTEN. Written Communications - None New Business 6.1 Purchase of a Charter Van for the Senior Center Consideration of the purchase of a charter van was deferred to a future meeting. However, Staff briefly reviewed the success of the trips to date. Of the eighteen trips offered only two trips were cancelled. The trips have been well received by the participants at the Senior Center. Staff also indicated that 200 participants had registered for the trips since May. The average trip attendance was thirteen people with an average waiting list of two. Because the agenda item was deferred no action was taken. However, the Committee Members made several comments related to the van purchase. Paul Silvas voiced that a 12 or 18 passenger van should be purchased for the Senior Center. Burr Cain suggested that a local car dealer might be interested in donating a van to the Senior Center in lieu of having the city purchasing a van. Mr. Cain suggested that the van be used to provide shorter trips, such as to the Stoneridge Mall and Hacienda Crossings. Several Committee Members agreed that the van could be used for other types of senior programs. Burr Cain asked if additional staff, such as a dispatcher or additional drivers, would be hired for the van program. Staff indicated that for each suggested program, the cost of gas, staffing, maintenance and operation would increase proportionally and needs to be researched. Once the purchase of the van is secured, Staff could plan for additional programs as needed in the future. 7.1 2002 Summer Quarterly Report Staff presented the Committee with the Summer 2002 Attendance Report. Barbara Gifford noted she was impressed with how the Senior Center attendance had increased. 8.1 Other Business With the success of the 2002 Step Out for Senior Centers event, Burr Cain suggested that the 2003 Step Out for Senior Centers event become a high priority. Mr. Cain recommended that the Committee solicit for more funding and Staff seek the City Council’s support of this statewide senior event. Resident Rich Guarienti recommended that a special meeting be held with City Council annually to include not only the Commissioners but also the Senior Advisory Committee Members to help improve overall communication between the various groups. Mr. Guarienti wanted to know more about the Dublin Senior Foundation and their goals and objectives. Burr Cain suggested that the main goal of the Foundation was to raise funds to purchase items for the Dublin Senior Center. In the past, the Foundation has been approached by Staff to purchase several non-budgeted items for the Senior Center. Past donations included the salad bar, the coffee urn, a soup warmer, VCR player, etc. The Foundation has also helped subsidize the entertainment for past luncheons and special events, such as the 2002 Step Out for Senior Center event. The Committee expressed interest in their involvement in developing the City’s Goals and Objectives for the next Fiscal Year. Adjournment: 11:15 a.m. Respectfully submitted, Anna Hudson Recreation Coordinator
