UNFINISHED BUSINESS
7.1 STEP OUT EVALUATION
Elsie Jennings reported that the registration for the walk went well. The walk had a good turn out with over 50 seniors and
friends registered for the walk. Each walker received a raffle ticket and t-shirt. Cm Mary Lou Bielke commented that this
event was bigger and better than in past years. The announcements that were made during the breakfast were good and overall,
she felt that the event went well. Cm Bielke suggested that a special area be marked off for the starting line and staff should
consider using a device to start the walkers. Staff agreed that using a bell, starter gun, streamers, or red ribbon would be
helpful to officially start the race. This year, although there were no plans to have the walkers use the library meeting room,
the walkers were allowed to keep warm in the library community room.
Cm Greer Payton suggested that the Senior Center doors be locked and opened at 9:00 a.m. for the breakfast. Cm Greer
Payton stated that she was fielding questions from many seniors who arrived early for the event. Staff shared that the Center
has always allowed participants to enter the Center early for all events and usually expected Seniors to arrive as early as an
hour prior to the event.
Cm Greer Payton suggested that all volunteers in charge of an event meet with Staff the night before to receive their
assignments, be shown where things are stored and be sure there is enough helpers to carry out the responsibilities. Cm Greer
Payton reported that everything worked out with the DHPA and Dublin Sister City who set up of the tables, prepared and made
the pancakes, and cleaned the kitchen. Greer reported that she decided to have a food table where the walkers could walk up
and be served. A suggestion was made that the pancakes be kept in the brown igloo to keep the food warm, and that the butter,
syrup, cups, and juice be placed on each table.
Cm Mary Lou Bielke inquired about the shirts that were purchased. Staff plans to sell the shirts. Staff noted that more double
and triple XL sizes should be purchased next year. Cm Greer Payton suggested that all the volunteers be given a free t-shirt.
Staff asked if entertainment should be scheduled. The Committee felt that entertainment was not necessary.
The transportation worked out well. Most people had made an effort to carpool to the Library prior to the Walking Event. We
had offered rides back to the Library with transportation in the Senior Center Van and the Police Van. Neither vehicle was
filled completely which indicated that seniors were very resourceful in planning a ride back to the library. The police escorts
and police department volunteers were a great help. The volunteers from the Police Department helped take down the signs as
they approached each sign along the route.
The Committee felt that the mini workshops and craft demonstration worked out well. A suggestion was made to schedule
more workshops without any breaks in between.
The Art Show was set up professionally. The Committee recognized Camille Centeno for her efforts. Next year, it was
suggested that the artists not only enter the show but also help display their art so Staff would have added help with the
displays. The Information and Resources faire also helped to attract the patrons from the library.
The Committee felt that the goals were met.
- To promote health and wellness as well as exercise the mind and creative side through art and photography.
- To incorporate an outreach program in the community to attract new seniors to the Senior Center
- To promote the "Live Well, Age Well" theme
The Committee suggested collecting donations for next year for door prizes.
Staff reported that approximately $625 in-kind donations were received this year. The Committee suggested that a celebrity be
identified with a lot of contacts so more donations can be received next year.
Cm Barbara Gifford requested that Staff thank all the individuals who helped at the Step Out Event in the newsletter.
Adjournment
Being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 10:45 a.m.
Respectfully submitted,
