SENIOR CENTER ADVISORY COMMITTEE
MINUTES OF JULY 5, 2007
Call to Order
Chairperson Al Edge called the meeting to order at 9:00 a.m.
Roll Call:

THE COMMITTEE REQUESTED STAFF TO AMEND THE JUNE 7, 2007 MEETING MINUTES
AND DEFERRED APPROVAL TO THE NEXT MEETING OF THE COMMITTEE.

New Business
2007 Spring Quarterly Report
Hudson presented the Committee with an overview of the 2007 Spring Quarterly Report. Hudson noted
that DancEscape was held in March and was a line dance event that drew over 100 dancers, many of
whom participate in the Senior Center’s line dance classes. The Volunteer Banquet was held in April
honoring the accomplishments of over 130 volunteers representing over 10,000 hours of service in 2006
at the Senior Center.
The L.I.F.E. (Learn Information for Empowerment) event was held in May. The theme was Dare to
Prepare for Life and featured over 30 vendors. Approximately 150 to 200 participants attended. Dennis
Richmond, from KTVU Channel 2, was the keynote speaker and there were presentations by the
American Red Cross and C.A.R.D. (Collaborating Agencies Responding to Disaster).
CM Bonetti motioned to accept the report and CM Edge seconded the motion and the Committee
unanimously approved.
Input on New Senior Center Programs and Events
The Fiscal Year 2007-2008 budget for the Senior Center included a higher service level to expand
staffing, operational hours, marketing, programs and events. Staff asked the Committee for
recommendations in the following areas:
1. Low-cost and fee-based classes and programs to offer on Wednesday evenings
2. New special event themes
3. Lecture series guest speakers, topics or themes
4. New senior sports leagues, classes or tournaments
The Committee engaged is a discussion about who seniors are and that there a differing needs between the
adult who is 55 and an adult who is 90.

CM Baron suggested changing the wording of the Center’s strategy written in the Center’s statement that
“The Dublin Senior Center offers a variety of activities designed to engage the mind, body and/or spirit.”
There was discussion to evaluate the successful programs including those sponsored by the Center, Las
Positas College and the Adult School. Discussion also centered on offering a forum to keep seniors
informed of current events.
CM Wood wanted more information about the demographics of the seniors we serve. Who are we able to
serve, and who do the current programs serve?
The following is an overview of the Committee’s suggestions:
• Financial Programs such as Pre-Retirement Planning, Financial Planning, and Where to Retire
• Makeovers
• Voter Informational Series
• Informational Forums about senior issues such as tax law changes, pensions, memory loss,
sleep apnea, and medical issues
• Series on “Suddenly” issues such as alone, single, parenting again, ill
• Dine Out Nights
• Casino Night
• Big Band Dance
• Help with Dealing with Loneliness and Isolation
• Include already successful daytime programs
• An evening meal similar to the lunch program
• Use of video to send programs to seniors
• Massage Therapy
• Academy Awards Party
• Medical Issues
The Committee engaged in a short discussion about point four; new senior sports leagues, classes or
tournaments.
It was suggested to conduct a survey utilizing the Recreation Department Winter Guide to broaden the
statistical base.
There was discussion about the value of marketing and community advertising.
CM Wood suggested forming a subcommittee to develop a marketing plan outline.
CM Wood and Baron volunteered to develop an outline for presentation at the next Committee meeting.
CM WOOD MOTIONED TO ACCEPT THE REPORT AND CM BONETTI SECONDED THE
MOTION AND THE COMMITTEE UNANIMOUSLY APPROVED.

Other Business
Delilah Vanderpool, who was recently appointed to the Committee by City Council, was introduced.
CM Wood compiled a list of action items that have not been addressed by Staff and provided the
Committee Members with a copy.
CM Baron requested that the Parks and Community Services Manager make a presentation to the
Committee comparing last year’s budget to this year’s budget.
The June 27th special meeting to critique the L.I.F.E. event was cancelled due to the resignation of CM
McCuen and to await the appointment of a new Committee Member. Additionally Staff will not begin
planning this event until later in the fall.
Adjournment
Being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 11:27 a.m.
