HomeMy WebLinkAbout02-18-2009 SCAC MinutesPage 1 of 4 CITY OF DUBLIN SENIOR CENTER ADVISORY COMMITTEE MINUTES OF FEBRUARY 5, 2009 Call to Order Vice Chairperson Baron called the meeting to order at 9:00 a.m. Roll Call: Committee Members (CM) Present: Martin Baron, Diane Bonetti, Al Edge, and Jeanette Villegas Absent: Delilah Vanderpool Parks and Community Services Commission Liaison Present: Rich Guarienti Staff Present: Paul McCreary, Assistant Director of Parks and Community Services; Anna Hudson, Recreation Coordinator; Diane Guenther, Office Assistant Oral Communications – None Approval of the Minutes – THE JANUARY MINUTES WERE AMENDED AS FOLLOWS; PARKS AND COMMUNITY SERVICES GOALS AND OBJECTIVES “He suggested the title ‘Nature is calling – isn’t it time you made a visit – the health, healing and spiritual benefits will amaze you.” CM BONETTI MADE AMOTION TO APPROVE THE MINUTES AS AMENDED; CM EDGE SECONDED THE MOTION. THE COMMITTEE UNANIMOUSLY APPROVED THE MINUTES OF THE JANUARY 8, 2009 MEETING AS AMENDED WITH CM VILLEGAS ABSTAINING. Written Communication – None Unfinished Business – None New Business Prior to the start of the meeting newly appointed Committee Member Jeanette Villegas was asked to introduce herself to the Committee. The Committee and Staff provided brief backgrounds about themselves. CM Villegas noted she was surprised there are only 8,000 seniors in Dublin and thought the percentage was low. McCreary briefly discussed City demographics. CM Baron made remarks about the Trail Trekkers and how the Trekkers are a model program and thanked Commissioner Guarienti for his contributions. ELECTION OF CHAIRPERSON AND VICE CHAIRPERSON Current Vice Chairperson Baron opened up the nominations. CM Baron and Bonetti were nominated. The Committee voted and unanimously elected CM Baron as Chairperson. CM Baron opened the nominations for Vice Chairperson. CM Bonetti was nominated. The Committee voted and unanimously elected CM Bonetti as Vice Chairperson. CITY OF DUBLIN SENIOR CENTER ADVISORY COMMITTEE MINUTES OF FEBRUARY 5, 2009 PAGE 2 OF 4 COMMITTEE OBJECTIVES FOR THE 2009-2010 TERM McCreary conducted a workshop to give the Committee Members an opportunity to better acquaint themselves with each other and discuss their roles and interests in serving on the Advisory Committee. McCreary asked what the Committee wanted to accomplish as a group. McCreary asked the Members to write down their thoughts then share their answers to the following two questions: 1. What was your motivation for joining this committee? 2. What is the most valuable asset you bring to the committee and Senior Center? The Committee’s response to the first questions regarding Motivation included the following ideas: • Help meet unmet needs of seniors • Learn about City operations • “Retread” myself • Giving back to the community • Improve the quality of life for seniors • Recommend programs • Encourage participation by men • Make seniors feel valuable • Get involved in the community • Get people active and outdoors The Committee engaged in a discussion about motivation. They following four areas of common interest emerged: • Enhance/improve quality of life • Promote and secure high quality of life for citizens • Be available • Include, reach out, and listen The Committee reviewed their assets and the following skills emerged: • Good observer/listener • Expounding benefits/accomplishments of Senior Center • Marketing/promotions • Make people happy, comfortable, feel welcomed • Motivate • Serve help others • Analytical • Solve/Breakdown complex issues • Organized • Desire to listen and learn • Program planner/leader • Detailed/logical • Listener • Motivating • Social CITY OF DUBLIN SENIOR CENTER ADVISORY COMMITTEE MINUTES OF FEBRUARY 5, 2009 PAGE 3 OF 4 The Committee engaged in a discussion about objectives/strategies. Their suggestions included: • Host Committee meetings throughout the community • Promote and support a Saturday program (as a group how can we make successful) • Reach out to seniors in group housing; establish groups, social networks • More promotional items pens/free food • Make people feel valued Through discussion, a possible vision statement was formulated: • Promote, reach out and listen to all so they can play, explore, connect. The Committee discussed their purpose and agreed their mission is to: • Serve as ambassadors that enhance quality of life for the senior community. After further discussion the Committee agreed to concentrate on the following six goals: 1. Expand availability of Advisory Members (phone numbers, etc) 2. Host presentations and meetings throughout the City 3. Promote and support the proposed Saturday morning programs 4. Reach out to senior groups and social networks in the community 5. Develop promotional materials to support outreach efforts 6. Make seniors feel valued A sub-committee comprised of Committee Members Baron and Bonetti was formed to come up with recommendations for goals and objectives that will help the Committee achieve the above strategies. Each Committee Member was asked to provide input to the sub-committee on potential goals and objectives for one of the above strategies. The Sub-Committee will meet with Paul McCreary and present a report to the Advisory Committee in March. UPDATE ON UPCOMING EVENTS Hudson provided the Committee with an overview of upcoming events as outlined in the Staff report. COFFEE SPONSORSHIP Hudson reported on the success of the coffee sponsorship program developed by Staff. She highlighted the donations that have been received as follows: Home Aide Home Care, Inc. $1,500 Tender Heart Home Care $ 550 Diablo Lodge $ 250 CM Baron commented on the powdered creamer and suggested using real dairy/non-dairy creamers as an option. Hudson noted this is a cost driven issue. OTHER BUSINESS CM Bonetti reported Tony Stabile as the newest member of the Dublin Senior Foundation, and that Burr Cain resigned from the Board. The Foundation will participate in the St. Patrick’s Day Celebration to raise funds for the Foundation. A $2,500 plaque donation was recently received in memory of Martin Sirlin who was one of the first Senior Center volunteers. CITY OF DUBLIN SENIOR CENTER ADVISORY COMMITTEE MINUTES OF FEBRUARY 5, 2009 PAGE 4 OF 4 Commissioner Guarienti provided a brief overview of the last Parks and Community Services Commission meeting. He discussed the public input workshop that was recently held for the Recreation and Aquatic Complex planned for Emerald Glen Park. CM Baron suggested the Committee have a presence in the St. Pat’s Parade. CM Bonetti commented that it would be too late to participate this year and suggested planning for next year.
