HomeMy WebLinkAbout10-07-2010 SCAC MinutesCITY OF DUBLIN SENIOR CENTER ADVISORY COMMITTEE MINUTES OF OCTOBER 7, 2010 Call to Order Chairperson Baron called the meeting to order at 9:30 a.m. Roll Call: Committee Members (CM) Present: Martin Baron, Delilah Vanderpool, Eddie Jo Mack, Diane Bonetti and Tim Pedersen Parks and Community Services Commission Liaison: Rich Guarienti Staff Present: Paul McCreary, Assistant Director of Parks and Community Services; Anna Hudson, Recreation Coordinator; Diane Guenther, Office Assistant Oral Communications - None Public Comments - None Approval of the Minutes – CM VANDERPOOL MADE A MOTION TO APPROVE THE SEPTEMBER 2, 2010 MINUTES; CM BONETTI SECONDED THE MOTION. THE COMMITTEE APPROVED THE MINUTES OF THE SEPTEMBER 2, 2010 MEETING WITH CM PEDERSEN ABSTAINING. Written Communication – None Unfinished Business – None New Business 2010 SUMMER QUARTERLY REPORT Hudson provided the Advisory Committee with an overview of the report. She stated that there were some significant changes to the programs offered that affected the attendance, such as the change in the lunch program, the cancellation of the day trips and the cancellation of some Las Positas classes. However, the overall attendance remained stable due to the introduction and implementation of new classes and activities. Although the rentals were down for the spring quarter, the Senior Center will likely see more rentals during the fall quarter as the Shannon Center is becoming fully booked on weekends. Hudson created and exhibited a new Senior Center display for outreach use. The first outreach was held at the Wells Church Wellness Fair in late September. CM Baron asked if the dip in lunch attendance was due to the change in the lunch program; Staff indicated that this may be so but the attendance showed a steady increase each month since it began in July. The Wednesday lunch program maintains an average of 25 to 35 seniors. The Advisory Committee had a brief discussion about the program and the food; and how some seniors were finding the food to be pleasantly good and plentiful. CM Baron suggested tapping into existing groups at the Senior Center to promote the lunch program. CITY OF DUBLIN SENIOR CENTER ADVISORY COMMITTEE MINUTES OF OCTOBER 7, 2010 PAGE 2 OF 3 Guarienti commented that the lunch program meets three points; it is an affordable lunch for people in need, convenient for those already at the Senior Center and a social venue for many. CM Baron noted the program is meeting the community’s needs at a more affordable cost than the City preparing the meals on its own. Therefore the service was not cut or reduced. CM Bonetti invited the Advisory Committee Members to volunteer at least once in the kitchen to see how the lunch program operates. Unlike the Meals on Wheels program, all the cold and hot items are delivered separately, and the temperatures monitored. CM Baron asked how several new activities got started. Hudson responded that individuals express interest in instructing or leading the activities. She also noted some patrons have stepped up to volunteer when an instructor is unable to teach. For example when the ukulele instructor left, a few of the students took over the activity. The same is true for the Tai Chi class. CM Baron suggested the possibility of a Senior Center Talent Show to highlight the talents of the music groups from the Senior Center by having them perform during lunch as a possible draw to the lunch program. McCreary suggested the possibility of a talent exchange with other senior centers. CM Pedersen asked if Staff thought the lunch program might grow. Hudson stated she is unsure if the program will grow. FALL SPECIAL EVENTS Hudson provided the Advisory Committee with an overview of the upcoming Fall Special Events. Guarienti suggested the Senior Center have a booth at the City’s St. Patrick’s Day event and participate in the parade. Staff commented that the Advisory Committee would need to take the lead on this as Staff is involved in other areas at this event. The Advisory Committee agreed to place this item on a future agenda for discussion. OTHER BUSINESS CM Bonetti reported on the Foundation meeting. The Foundation plans to send a representative to the Youth Advisory Committee Car Show planning meeting. The Foundation is still in the planning stages of this activity. The Parks and Community Services Commission did not meet last month. CM Mack will represent the Senior Center at the October 18th meeting, CM Baron plans to attend the meeting on November 15th and CM Pedersen volunteered to be present at the December 20th meeting. Guarienti commented on the City’s new website, noting it was much more user-friendly. McCreary pointed out there are many opt-in options available to receive updates on items of interest from the City. CM Mack suggested charging a fee for those people who wish to come in a pick up a copy of the Dublin Doings. The Advisory Committee requested to place this item on a future agenda for discussion. McCreary indicated this will be considered as part of a future item relating to proposed changes to the Senior Center Supporter Program.
