Roll Call: Committee Members (CM) Present: Diane Bonetti, Sue Cervantes, Eddie Jo Mack, Lee Sandeman Absent: Tim Pedersen Parks and Community Services Commission Liaison Present: Connie Mack Staff Present: Anna Hudson, Recreation Coordinator; Diane Guenther, Office Assistant Oral Communications The Advisory Committee Members engaged in a brief discussion about extending invitations to individuals and groups to attend the meetings. Public Comments - None Approval of the Minutes CM BONETTI MADE A MOTION TO APPROVE THE MARCH 3, 2011 MINUTES. THE MOTION WAS SECONDED BY CM CERVANTES. THE COMMITTEE UNANIMOUSLY APPROVED THE MINUTES OF THE MARCH MEETING. Written Communication – None Unfinished Business – None New Business 2011 WINTER QUARTERLY REPORT Hudson provided the Advisory Committee with an overview of the item as outlined in the Staff report. CM Sandeman commented positively on the improvement in overall participation numbers. CM Mack asked if Blankets for Vets was reaching out to church groups to participate in this activity. Hudson indicated not specifically, but through local newspaper articles many donations of yarn and completed blankets were received. She noted that participation has grown from five participants to approximately 15 each week. LUNCH PROGRAM PORMOTIONAL CAMPAIGN Hudson discussed the background of the current lunch program that is provided by Spectrum community Services as outlined in the Staff report. CM Cervantes volunteered to purchase Spectrum punch cards to use as door prize items at outreach events at the Groves. CM Cervantes asked if it was possible for the Groves to contract to have lunch served there quarterly for as many as 60 people. Hudson indicated there are laws that govern commercial kitchen facilities and food handling that may not make it feasible to offer the program at the Groves. She also suggested seeking donations from volunteers to promote the program. Hudson suggested that churches might identify those seniors in need of meals in their congregations. CM Mack asked if transportation to the Senior Center was a barrier to participation. Hudson indicted yes; CM Mack suggested that if you invite someone to lunch you might consider providing the transportation for them. Commissioner Mack suggested a Bring a Friend to Lunch Day each month. The Advisory Committee thought designating a day was a good idea. Other Business CM Bonetti passed out a sign up sheet for the Advisory Committee Members to sign up to attend the Parks and Community Services Commission Meetings. CM Cervantes commented she has jump-started outreach at the Groves. On April 8th from 12:00-2:00PM she plans to be available at the Groves for coffee and cookies and have sign-ups available for Senior Center activities. She is coordinating with The Groves to provide the Senior Center with a half page of their monthly newsletter to advertise Senior Center activities. Commissioner Mack volunteered to help with this outreach. CM Cervantes will personally be purchasing door prizes to give out at these outreach events CM Mack indicated she would like to begin conducting outreach with the churches. Commissioner Mack provided the Advisory Committee with an overview of the March Parks and Community Services Commission meeting. CM Bonetti reported on the Senior Center Foundation Meeting and an update on the Car Show and Ice Cream Social. CM Mack and CM Cervantes volunteered to work at this event. CM Mack asked about the opening the San Leandro Senior Center. Staff members, Hudson, Centeno and Lau attended the grand opening and commented that it is a very nice facility. Adjournment Being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 10:45AM.
