Roll Call: Committee Members (CM) Present: Diane Bonetti, Sue Cervantes, Eddie Jo Mack, Lee Sandeman, Tim Pedersen Parks and Community Services Commission Liaison Present: Connie Mack Staff Present: Paul McCreary, Assistant Director of Parks and Community Services; Anna Hudson, Recreation Coordinator; Diane Guenther, Office Assistant Oral Communications – None Public Comments – None Approval of the Minutes CM MACK MADE A MOTION TO APPROVE THE APRIL 7, 2011 MINUTES. THE MOTION WAS SECONDED BY CM CERVANTES. THE ADVISORY COMMITTEE UNANIMOUSLY APPROVED THE MINUTES OF THE APRIL MEETING WITH CM PEDERSEN ABSTAINING. Written Communication – None Unfinished Business – None New Business INTERGENERATIONAL CAR SHOW AND ICE CREAM SOCIAL EVALUATION McCreary provided the Advisory Committee an overview of this event as outlined in the agenda statement and asked the Committee Members for their input. CM Mack commented that the show was very nice and the youth did a great job. She noted this venue may be too small for next year. CM Bonetti noted this was the first car show and she was very pleased with the outcome. There were 12 cars pre-registered and on the day of the show 40 vehicles were on display. CM Bonetti thanked CM Mack and Commissioner Mack for their help. CM Bonetti also commented the venue will be too small for next year’s event. Commissioner Mack commented how much she enjoyed working with the youth. Hudson passed along comments from the Dublin Senior Foundation President that he also felt the venue will be too small for next year and the need to find a new location. The Youth Advisory Committee and the Senior Center Advisory Committee’s Sub-Committee will be meeting today to further evaluate the event. CITY OF DUBLIN SENIOR CENTER ADVISORY COMMITTEE MINUTES OF MAY 5, 2011 PAGE 2 OF 3 ADVISORY COMMITTEE GOALS AND OBJECTIVES McCreary reviewed the Senior Center Vision, Mission and Core Values. The Advisory Committee Members agreed to discuss a potential schedule and work plan to accomplish the Strategic Goals over the two year term. Additionally, they were asked to discuss any additions, changes or deletions to the proposed list. CM Mack suggested that Goal 1C and Goal 3E could be combined. CM Cervantes suggested having PG&E at the next Resource Fair to provide information on its CARE program. CM Mack asked how to identify who may receive the Welcome Packet. Staff indicated targeting where seniors live and through real estate agents and leasing offices. CM Bonetti suggested including information about the Dublin San Ramon Services District senior discount program. CM Cervantes suggested that a Holiday Boutique be added to Goal 2. CM Bonetti indicated the Senior Center Foundation is already sponsoring one in November. All items for the boutique will be hand- crafted and tables will be available for rent. CM Cervantes also suggested having a pre-sale inviting City employees and Chamber members. CM Cervantes suggested having Senior Center student art for sale at the boutique. CM Cervantes suggested adding a Spring Boutique. CM MACK MADE A MOTION TO ADD STRATEGIC GOAL #2C – PLAN AND IMPLEMENT A SPRING BOUTIQUE. THE MOTION WAS SECONDED BY CM BONETTI AND THE ADVISORY COMMITTEE UNANIMOUSLY APPROVED. The Advisory Committee Members discussed who would take the lead for each Strategic Goal and decided: Strategic Goal #1 – Reach out to senior groups and social networks in the community Objectives A. Recruit volunteer liaisons at senior housing complexes to serve as a “Senior Center Concierge” to promote upcoming events and programs. CM CERVANTES AND CONNIE MACK B. Provide off-site registration at senior housing complexes for luncheons and special events. CM CERVANTES AND CONNIE MACK C. Make presentations at local churches to promote Senior Center programs and services. CM MACK AND PEDERSEN Strategic Goal #2 – Assist Staff with planning and implementing new special events to attract new patrons to the Senior Center Objectives A. Plan and implement an annual intergenerational event with the Youth Advisory Committee. CM BONETTI AND MACK B. Plan and implement a Fashion Show as a cooperative event with the Dublin Senior Foundation. CM MACK AND BONETTI C. Plan and implement a Spring Boutique. CM CERVANTES AND BONETTI CITY OF DUBLIN SENIOR CENTER ADVISORY COMMITTEE MINUTES OF MAY 5, 2011 PAGE 3 OF 3 Strategic Goal #3 – Educate residents about Dublin and resources available for older adults Objectives A. Conduct annual Senior Resource Fair. CM PEDERSEN, BONETTI AND CONNIE MACK B. Create and distribute a “Welcome Wagon Packet” for older adults moving to Dublin that highlights programs, services, parks and facilities available through the City. CM SANDEMAN AND CERVANTES C. Provide additional travel training programs with public transit agencies. STAFF D. Conduct a bus tour of Dublin’s parks, facilities and new development in the community. STAFF E. Create an annual discount card for Dublin Senior Center Supporters that is good for senior discounts at local businesses. CM PEDERSEN AND MACK Staff will develop an implementation plan for the Advisory Committee’s approval. Other Business CM Pedersen commented on some concerns about isolated seniors. The Advisory Committee engaged in a discussion about programs that are available to seniors. Hudson recommended contacting agencies like Senior Support as a resource. Commissioner Mack gave a brief report on the Parks and Community Services Commission meeting. Adjournment Being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 11:17 AM.
